STYLE MUSE | Maxine Munson

If bold colors and patterns are your thing, then Maxine Munson is for you.

Vancouver-based, Maxine works as a freelance Makeup Artist with creative agency Nobasura, working with some of Canada's top brands. If you haven't seen Maxine's eye-catching looks, you may be familiar with her in-person Makeup workshops where she teaches you the tools to perfect your look.

Originally from Victoria, BC, Maxine's love for makeup began over 15 years ago, sparked while living in Melbourne and diving into its fashion scene. After studying specialized makeup and working behind the scenes at Fashion Week, she returned to Canada and joined Nars. What started as a retail job turned into a seven-year journey that led her to train artists across Western Canada and work backstage at Fashion Weeks in New York and London.

How do you navigate the fast-paced online trends with your personal style?

My personal style is always evolving and although I find myself dressing in ways that are often different from what I see in my own community I still love a good trend when it feels right for my body.  I used to wear cropped pants to make my legs look longer but now starting to embrace the baggier look. The Bra T-shirt trend I also love because it's bold and sexy in a way where I feel slightly exposed without actually being exposed.

Why do you choose secondhand?

I love the hunt for special and unique pieces that most others don't have. I also love bargains, and whenever people ask about what I'm wearing, I always feel the need to explain not only where I got it from but also the deal that I scored.

What is your most coveted second hand piece?

I got a Parisian navy blue mechanic's suit years ago. I love that I can zip it up, dress for the day, and be ready to work.

Where do you see the fashion industry heading?

Overconsumption is catching up with us, and in a way that's a good thing. It's forcing us to rethink our habits and be more intentional about where we spend our money. The industry is shifting toward more thoughtful choices: investing in pieces that bring us joy and confidence, whether new or secondhand. I want to support smaller brands that lead with originality and inclusivity. Clothing that's designed to adapt like one-size-fits-most styles feels like a step toward a healthier, more sustainable future.

What style lessons do you want to share with future generations?

Wear what makes you happy and comfortable. Joy should be at the heart of personal style. Take care of your clothes, and don't be afraid to tailor pieces so they fit you perfectly. When something feels made for you, you're more likely to love it and wear it for years. And always invest in at least one or two beautiful dresses that make you feel like a million bucks because you deserve to move through the world like a star.
